A Harbour Town Next to Kinnaird Head

Fraserburgh is built around its harbour, one of the busiest fishing ports in the northeast, with Kinnaird Head lighthouse — now the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses — sitting right at the town's edge. It's about as exposed a spot as this coastline gets, and we plan every install around that fact rather than treating it as a standard job. Most of what we fit is still a fairly ordinary residential solar PV installation; it's the specification underneath it that changes.

Wind Loading and Salt Air Change the Spec

Direct, unbroken exposure to North Sea weather means higher wind loading on the roof and more salt in the air than almost anywhere else we work. We use wind-rated mounting systems calculated for this exposure, not a generic mid-range spec, and we specify marine-grade or corrosion-resistant fixings rather than standard galvanised ones. Cheaper fixings corrode faster this close to the sea, and replacing them later means taking part of the array apart.

Granite Housing Like Peterhead's

Housing stock here shares a lot with Peterhead — solid granite and sandstone terraces near the centre, built to handle coastal weather but old enough that roofing felt, flashing and battens sometimes need attention before panels go on. We check this at survey and deal with it under our roof repairs and preparation service if needed, rather than fitting panels over a roof that isn't ready.
